Swaziland is a small landlocked economy, subsistence agriculture occupies more than 80% of the Swazi population. Swaziland manufacturing features a number of agro processing factories. Mining in Swaziland has declined in importance in recent years: diamond mines have shut down because of the depletion of easily accessible reserves; high-grade iron ore deposits were depleted by 1978; and health concerns have cut world demand for asbestos. Exports of soft drink concentrate, sugar, and wood pulp are the main earners of hard currency for Swaziland. Swaziland is surrounded by South Africa, except for a short border with Mozambique, Swaziland is heavily dependent on South Africa from which it receives nine-tenths of its imports and to which it sends more than two-thirds of its exports.

The Swaziland government is trying to improve the atmosphere for foreign investment and the small amount of Tourism in Swaziland is slowly increasing. Swaziland has much to offer foreign tourists although it is not always easy to find accommodation facilities throughout the country Swaziland offers some spectacular destinations for those who know.

Hlane Royal National Park

In the vast bushveld expanse of Eastern Swaziland where the hot, still sun of africa beats on the dry but life-giving soils as it has for thousands of years, and the rumbling roars of the lions are heard in the cool dusky evenings, lies Swazilands largest protected area, Hlane Royal National Park. The park is home to four of the big five; the lion, elephant, rhino and leopard. Other animals include hippo, giraffe, crocodile, blue wildebeest and many more. Game viewing is done on open land rover and vw syncro minibus and self-guide tours are available.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Mlilwane, Swazilands pioneer conservation area is a beautiful secluded sanctuary situated in Swazilands valley of heaven, the ezulwini valley. The sanctuarys grasslands stretch up onto the striking nyonyane mountain with its granite peak known as the rock of execution where the ancient san once lived. Game viewing of giraffe, hippo, crocodile, zebra, impala, etc can be done on open land rover, horse back or self-guided tours.

Mkhaya Game Reserve

In the Southeast of Swaziland, in the heart of the lowveld lies an unspoilt wilderness, haven to endangered species who roam the magnificent africa bush. Unique intimate encounters with Mkhayas wildlife are almost guaranteed and the tranquil riverine forest at stone camp provides a comfortable real bush experience. Mkhaya currently supports four of the big five; with leopard, buffalo, and black and white rhino. Giraffe, hippo, crocodile, roan and sable antelope are some of the animals found. Visitors meet Mkhaya land rover at Phuzumoya and are thereafter taken to the rangers house where your vehicle is left whilst you embark on your journey through Mkhaya.

Mbuluzi Game Reserve

Mbuluzi lies in the foothills of the Lubombo mountains and is part of 60,000 ha conservancy that includes Mlawula Nature Reserve and Hlane Royal National Park. Close to Mozambique, and South Africa, it is easily accessible by car. For exploring the reserve, vehicles with a high clearance are recommended due to the nature of the terrain. Open backed 4x4 vehicles are available for hire by guests. This beautiful reserve, the habitat of over 300 species of birds, including some rare and uncommon species, and much varied game, is a unique wilderness area. The varied plant life and magnificent indigenous trees make it a fascinating place to visit. There is a good network of sand roads making it ideal for mountain biking and joggers. What better way to get really close to nature!

Phophonyane Nature Reserve

Phophonyane is rich in natural vegetation and year round water with a remarkable over 230 bird species. Birds including the narina trogan, purple-crested lourie, wood owl ensure the quiet melody of water is never without an orchestra of natures finest musicians.

Piggs peak

Piggs Peak is a town in north western Swaziland. It was founded around gold prospecting in 1884, but its main industry is now forestry. The Phophonyane Falls lie near the town.
